About Northern Electric Cooperative

Northern Electric Cooperative is a community-focused organization that provides safe and reliable electricity to more than 4,696 members via nearly 2,600 miles of distribution power lines.

Northern Electric was built by the communities we serve in northeastern South Dakota after electric cooperatives were organized nationwide in 1937.

Today, Northern Electric Cooperative serves the modern-day power needs of residential, commercial, and industrial consumer-members throughout Brown and Spink counties. Commercial and industrial consumers in northeast South Dakota use about half of the electricity distributed by Northern Electric with residential and farm members making up the other half.

A third of the power Northern Electric distributes through its wholesale power supplier - East River Electric Power Cooperative based in Madison, South Dakota - comes from renewable wind generation and hydropower.

As a Touchstone Energy Cooperative, Northern Electric is committed to its core values of integrity, accountability, innovation, and commitment to the community.

The main Northern Electric office is located in Bath, South Dakota, with a second office and shop located in Redfield. If you have any questions about service or need to report an outage call 605-225-0310 or 1-800-529-0310.
