Each year Northern Electric Cooperative and Basin Electric Cooperative provide a $500 and $1,000 scholarship respectively. The selection of the winners in based on SAT/ACT scores, grade point average, an application outlining high school/college honors, community and school activities, employment history, and future career goals, a short essay focused on an electricity or cooperative theme (new topic selected every year) and a written recommendation by a third party. Scholarships for 2014 have been awarded. Information for the 2015 scholarships will be available in January of 2015.

2014 Scholarship Winners:
The $1,000 scholarship recipient for 2014, Erin Sternhagen, attends the University of South Dakota. She is pursuing a degree in Medical Biology (pre-medicine) with minors in Spanish and Chemistry. Erin is very involved at USD in many extracurricular activities, such as Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, USD Student Ambassadors, and Sigma Alpha Pi honor society, to name a few. Her parents are Northern Electric members Craig and Jodi Sternhagen of Groton.
This year's $500 scholarship was awarded to Michael Sperry who attends Roncalli High School. He plans on attending the University of Mary to pursue a degree in Biology, Pre-Optometry with a minor in Chemistry. He is the son of NEC members Scott and Kathy Sperry of Bath. Michael is involved in 4-H, band, theater, oral interp, SADD, National Honor Society, Student Council Representative, and many other activities.
